How an older server stopped a line in China for days
Recently, a Brückner hotline technician in China switched to work mode in a blink when a sharp ring broke the quiet weekend night. Through the phone came an anxious voice from a customer: “The server is down! Line stopped!”
That was how the story started. An old server finally ended with a hardware damage after 15 years of hard work at an 8,2m BOPP line. However, during the last 1,5 decades, the fast-changing electronical world already witnessed several generations of updates. The ticking of the clock during the line stop kept reminding the people of the money loss. The customer searched in the local market for days and finally, the broken server hardware component was found. Nevertheless, just when the customer felt a sense of relief, the data at the line was lost. However, since Brückner makes a very detailed backup of all data during a line’s commissioning, the backup data from Brückner Germany finally turned out to be very important. By providing a temporary virtualized emergency solution based on that backup, the Brückner team was able to restart the server and the line within only a few hours.
The solution: Virtualized Server
All this could have been avoided by an upgrade to a Virtualized Server which extends the lifecycle of a system installation considerably. How does it work? The original software installation – operating system and application software – is wrapped into an additional virtualization software layer called a “Hypervisor”. There are no hardware dependencies any more. The Hypervisor presents a standard set of hardware components to the installed operating system and will remain more consistent over time. Brückner offers the virtualized server for all current IPC / PVSS versions.
After the quick help, the Chinese customer was immediately convinced by the benefits of a virtualized server. Within only two months the Brückner team in China installed the virtualized server at the line with a plug-and-play design which simplifies the installation significantly and finally replaced the intermediate virtualized solution. Today, the customer is very pleased with the new system: “The virtualized server is really helpful. The installation process is also very easy. We don’t worry about searching around for spare parts anymore! Super!”
